Black Cinema Landmark Riverbend Lands First-Ever Atlanta Premiere at Plaza Theatre
A long-lost chapter of Southern cinematic history is finally coming home to Georgia.
On Saturday, August 15, 2026, Atlanta’s historic Plaza Theatre hosts the first-ever local screening of Riverbend: The Director’s Cut. The event features an appearance by Academy Award-nominated actress Margaret Avery (The Color Purple) and acclaimed actor Julius Tennon (The Woman King).
Set in rural Georgia during the Civil Rights era, Riverbend tells the story of three Black Vietnam veterans who step up to help a small Southern town organize against a violent, racist sheriff. Though the narrative takes root in Georgia soil, the film never screened in Atlanta during its initial release.
After a brief theatrical run and VHS release, Riverbend disappeared from public view for decades. Now, thanks to a director-approved 6K digital restoration from the original 35mm film and sound elements, this independent Black cinema classic returns to the big screen.

The Story Behind Riverbend: History, Resistance, and Restoration
Riverbend balances political tension, historic context, and action. Written by Samuel Vance, the screenplay captures the tension of Vietnam-era America through evocative dialogue and grounded characters.
The film features one of the final leading performances by late actor and martial artist Steve James. His performance anchors the ensemble alongside Avery and Tennon. Critics at IndieWire praised the project’s emotional depth, highlighting its “rich textures” and “uniformly excellent performances”.
Despite its compelling narrative and cast, Riverbend fell out of distribution, making physical copies extremely rare. Film archivists worked to recover the physical 35mm elements, paving the way for a 6K scan that preserves the original textures while upgrading the visual and audio quality for modern theaters.

Supporting Black Film Preservation in Atlanta
The event marks the physical media release of Riverbend on Blu-ray. The release comes from Reelblack Renaissance, a Black-owned boutique physical media label focused on restoring, preserving, and reissuing lost works of Black cinema.
For this Atlanta presentation, Reelblack Renaissance partnered with local cultural organizations, including the Black Eye Film Club and Plazadrome.
The new Blu-ray edition includes over four hours of bonus material, archival footage, and commentary tracks. Attendees can purchase the disc on-site alongside commemorative posters created by artist Aaron Kai. Participating cast members and filmmakers will remain after the screening for a public autograph session.
