No. 3 Georgia defeated No. 17 Florida 27-8 on Saturday, Oct. 31, in the Invesco QQQ Atlanta Gridiron Classic at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Bulldogs forced four turnovers and kept Florida scoreless through three quarters. The game also marked the first time the rivalry was played in Atlanta.
The recap below draws on publicly available reporting and official team information. Atlanta Wave TV is not credentialed for this event and did not attend the game.
1. Georgia turned pressure into points
The defining play came just before halftime. With Florida attempting to build a scoring drive, Georgia linebacker Quintavius Johnson sacked quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. and forced a fumble. Chris Cole recovered the ball and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown with 29 seconds left in the half.
The score put Georgia ahead 24-0 and capped a first-half stretch in which the Bulldogs converted defensive stops into points. According to Georgia Athletics’ game recap, Georgia scored 17 points off four takeaways. Cole led the Bulldogs with nine tackles and added a sack.
The score also reflected how Georgia’s pass rush and run defense worked together. Florida had difficulty sustaining its rushing attack, giving Georgia more chances to pressure the quarterback. The Bulldogs finished with four sacks and 11 tackles for loss.
2. Three interceptions stopped Florida’s drives
Georgia’s defense produced three interceptions in addition to Cole’s fumble-return touchdown. Ellis Robinson IV made the first, grabbing an errant pass on Florida’s opening possession. Demello Jones intercepted a second pass in the following quarter and returned it 23 yards, setting Georgia up at the Florida 17-yard line.
Braylon Conley’s interception carried particular weight. Florida had advanced to the Georgia 3-yard line late in the third quarter, with a chance to put points on the board. Conley caught the pass in the end zone, ending the drive and preserving Georgia’s 24-0 lead.
That sequence showed the value of finishing a defensive series. Florida moved close to scoring range, but Georgia’s secondary prevented the opportunity from becoming points. The official postgame notes identify Conley’s pick as the first of his career.

3. Florida’s running game never found a rhythm
Georgia limited Florida to 48 rushing yards on 28 carries, according to the official recap and CBS Sports’ Associated Press report. Florida running back Jadan Baugh, who entered as one of the team’s leading rushers, finished with 38 yards on 17 carries.
The Bulldogs’ run defense helped set the conditions for the turnovers. When Florida could not rely on steady gains on the ground, Georgia had more opportunities to disrupt passing plays. The Bulldogs also limited Florida to 246 yards of total offense in the UGA recap.
The defense held Florida scoreless for the first three quarters. The Gators finally scored on a two-yard run by Jones Jr. with 6:59 remaining in the fourth quarter, then added a two-point conversion. Georgia responded with a field goal to make the final score 27-8.

4. Georgia bounced back, while the passing game remains a question
The win offered a response to Georgia’s 27-24 loss to Auburn on Oct. 17. Against Florida, Georgia protected the ball and won the turnover battle, while the defense created four takeaways. The result improved the Bulldogs to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the SEC.
Georgia’s offense added 318 yards, including 217 on the ground. Nate Frazier and Bo Walker each scored on one-yard runs, and Georgia’s rushing attack helped sustain drives and manage the game. Quarterback Gunner Stockton completed 13 of 23 passes for 101 yards and ran for 45 yards, according to UGA’s postgame notes.
The ground game and defensive performance provided a clear path to the win. Still, the passing numbers leave room for discussion. CBS Sports noted that Georgia’s passing game remained a concern despite the result. The defense’s performance carried the day, but Georgia faces another ranked opponent next week.
A first Atlanta setting for the rivalry
The matchup was played in Atlanta because of the renovation of Jacksonville’s EverBank Stadium, the rivalry’s traditional venue. ESPN reported that the project is valued at $1.4 billion. The Oct. 31 game was the first in the series’ history to take place in Atlanta, and the official UGA recap reported a sellout crowd of 72,541 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
ESPN’s game report noted that the teams are scheduled to meet in Tampa next season before the series returns to Jacksonville in 2028. For this edition, Atlanta provided a new setting for one of college football’s longstanding rivalries.

What comes next
Georgia travels to Oxford to face No. 12 Ole Miss on Nov. 7. The matchup gives the Bulldogs another ranked test after the Florida win. Florida next hosts Oklahoma, while its place in the rankings may shift after the loss.
The main takeaway from the Atlanta Gridiron Classic is straightforward: Georgia’s defense controlled the game with pressure, run defense and timely turnovers. The 27-8 result gave the Bulldogs a rebound win and added a new chapter to the rivalry in Atlanta.
