Atlanta Wave TV’s own Fiona Mesha spoke with legendary producer, pioneer, and hitmaker Teddy Riley for an exclusive conversation about musical precision, historic studio sessions, and a major personal announcement regarding his future in the city of Atlanta.
Studying Under the King of Pop
With the ongoing buzz surrounding the legacy and cinematic portrayals of Michael Jackson, Mâche asked Riley about his experience producing alongside the King of Pop on iconic projects like Dangerous, HIStory, and Invincible. Riley did not hesitate to describe the masterclass environment Jackson created in the studio.
“It was like going to college on my freshman year,” Riley explained. “Learning things that I didn’t get a chance to learn as I was coming up doing music. Because when we start, we’re hungry and we wing it. You know how we improvise. But with Michael, it was no improv. We wasn’t improvising nothing.”
Riley recalled how Jackson acted as a strict yet inspiring professor who held every collaborator—including Riley and the late Bernard Bell—to the absolute highest creative standard.
“He was like, ‘Okay, it’s not right. Go back to the drawing board,’” Riley shared. “So that’s what a professor does. When you don’t get your work right, he sends you back. And that’s what we learned.”
Returning to Atlanta to Build
While his contributions to music history are undisputed, Riley’s focus is firmly set on community building and legacy. During the interview, he officially dropped a major announcement for the city of Atlanta.
“Just to let everybody know for the record… I will be moving back here,” Riley revealed. “We’re actually looking for property to build a community. I’m back here periodically looking at different land, and I can’t wait to get back here to do more.”
For Riley, returning to Atlanta is deeply tied to philanthropy and grassroots service. He highlighted his past work with music industry veteran Shanti Das and the Atlanta Mission, emphasizing his commitment to expanding those efforts now.
“The music business is good. It’s treated me well,” Riley reflected. “But now it’s time to get out and do more community service. To do more is going to be amazing.”
As Atlanta continues to solidify its place as the cultural capital of the South, welcoming back a legend of Teddy Riley’s caliber—with a mission focused on uplifting the community—is a win for the entire city.
